Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island (Ross Island)
Ross Island, officially known as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, carries immense historical importance in the British India. During the British colonial period, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters of the Andaman Islands. The island was home to a number of important buildings and facilities, including the Government House, the Commissioner’s Bungalow, the Chief Commissioner’s residence, a hospital and a church. The island was also home to a number of British officers and their families.
In March 1942, during the Second World War, Andaman & Nicobar Islands was captured by the Japanese. Charles Francis Waterfall, who was the Chief Commissioner in 1938, was captured by the Japanese during their invasion of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He was held as a prisoner of war, and his deputy, Major Bird, was beheaded by the Japanese at the Aberdeen clock tower in Port Blair.
From 1942 to 1945, Ross Island was occupied by the Japanese. The Government House became the residence of the Japanese admiral for three years, from March 1942 to October 1945. It was during this period that Subhas Chandra Bose, who took the help of Japanese in his fight against the British, stayed at the Island for a day in December 1943. Netaji also hoisted the national tricolor at the top of the Government House, which is one of the most memorable events in the history of India. Today, the island is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can explore the ruins of the Government House, the Commissioner’s Bungalow, and other buildings that are a testament to the island’s rich history.
