Barren Island

Barren Island is situated about 138 kilometers northeast of Port Blair, in the Andaman Sea, and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory of India. It is known for being the only active volcano in South Asia. The volcano on Barren Island has been erupting sporadically since its first recorded eruption in 1787. The eruptions have continued intermittently over the years, with significant activity observed in recent decades. The last major eruption occurred in 2017, which resulted in the emission of ash clouds and lava flows.

Due to its volcanic activity, Barren Island is uninhabited by humans. It is named “Barren Island” because the eruptions and volcanic activity have prevented vegetation from flourishing on the island. The steep slopes and rugged terrain make it inhospitable for most forms of life. However, the surrounding waters are known for their rich marine life, including coral reefs, making it an interesting area for diving and scientific research.

Barren Island is accessible by boat or helicopter, but visits are restricted due to safety concerns associated with volcanic activity. It is important to note that access to the island is regulated, and it is advisable to check with local authorities and tour operators for the latest information before planning a visit.

It is covered with dense forests, offering a habitat for various bird species, reptiles, and other wildlife. The island’s pristine beaches and clear waters make it an attractive destination for nature enthusiasts and those interested in exploring its natural wonders.

Due to its ecological significance, access to Narcondam Island is restricted, and permissions from the appropriate authorities are required to visit. The island is not open to general tourism, but scientific researchers and conservationists may be granted access for specific purposes.

Narcondam Island stands as a unique and valuable part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, contributing to the region’s rich biodiversity and ecological heritage.
